The primary purpose of a bed is to provide recuperative rest and rejuvenation.

Not only because we spend a 1/3rd of our lives on it, but because our body needs to rest and rejuvenate and will deteriorate without it!

Whilst other Industries worldwide have kept up or operate at the cutting edge of scientific knowledge, the Bedding Industry has not progressed much since the inception of the innerspring.

Developing New & Improved Beds

Spinal Support Bed Systems and

Futura aim to use Scientific Principles and Testing to ever develop, improve and manufacture beds that aid and provide the sleeper with - 'the best levels of rest and rejuvenation'

Our History - How it all Began

During the first half of 1996, our founder - Mr. Mario Piraino spent 6 whole months researching beds full time.

He set up a testing lab in his garage and tested all body types. None of his visiting friends and family escaped. They were each tested on differing spring units, filled out questionnaires and had their body support profile measured and recorded.

Mario Piraino

Structural Engineer

Founder of Spinal Support Bed Systems

Mr.Piraino's conclusions were that since human bodies are each unique in weight and shape, they are each better supported by a certain type of bed spring than others.

By the end of the year he had lodged patent applications for a 'Hybrid Mattress' and opened a retail showroom in Nunawading Melbourne, calling it:'His & Hers Orthopedic Beds'

From this showroom he continued to test each and every customer on each type of spring unit available (5,6,7 turn Bonnell spring, LFK spring, Continuous coil type spring and pocket spring).

Within 12 months he had tested and noted the supportive differences of each of the spring types on literally thousands of people. As a result, Thousands of people were sleeping comfortably on their 'hybrid bed'.

Individual tailored solutions cost little more than standard mattresses so Customers bought them in droves.

Customers liked his 'individual tailored solutions' - especially as they cost no more than standard type mattresses available from the leading brands, and so his business flourished. Within a few years showrooms at Dandenong and North Fitzroy were added, but - more importantly, Mario started building in a lot of individual requirements for customers - often only on 1 side of the mattress.

Feeling uncomfortable about the fact that whilst extra supportive features etc. were fixed and may need to be changed if the customer gained weight, lost weight, changed sleeping partners. Mario developed mattresses and systems which allowed the level of support to be both varied in magnitude and position.

Variable support is paramount to make your bed comfortable

We are all individuals with varying body shapes and weight therefore we all wear different size clothes and shoes, we adjust our car seats and mirrors differently to that of our partners. Similarly, our beds require the same level of varied support to cater to our individual shape and weight as well as those of our partner.

Unique technology now made available to the Australian marketplace and the World.

In 2001 Mario called a meeting of his immediate family. He explained the many benefits and huge potential of his bed systems. After much discussion, it was decided that the IP would be licensed throughout the world under the Futura Bed Technology brand but that the beds would be manufactured for the Australian market by a family company set up for this purpose. Spinal Support Bed Systems was set up and Mario's son Alex left his building trade and joined the family company.

With the generous help of Sleepeezee Bedding, Alex soon set up a basic manufacturing facility within their factory in Campbellfield. Serving a 3 year apprenticeship in all aspects of mattress manufacturing, Alex , a quick learner soon moved to their current site on the Hume Highway in 2004. The company currently operates successfully at this site.
